Harivarasanam : The lullaby to Lord Ayyappa

The divine song “Harivarasanam” or Hari Haratmaka Ashtakam is sung when the sanctum sanctorum of the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple close for the day at night. The emotions of Ayyappa devotees in Sabarimala are beyond explanation when they hear Harivarsanam rendered in Sanctorium. The whole area will be filled with Sarana Manthra and every devotee feel the presence of Lord Ayyappa in their minds.

The Melshanti and the other priests stand on both the sides of Ayyappa idol and recite the Harivarasanam. While it’s been rendered one by one the priests exits the Sanctum Sanctorum without making noise. When the song is sung about halfway, the chief priest or Melshanti puts off each of the lamp in the sanctum sanctorum. As the song ends only the Melshanti will be inside the Sreekovil or Sacred Sanctorium. When the final line is sung, the chief priest closes the door of the Sanctum Sanctorum and locks it.

At present the temple plays the Harivarasanam recital by noted singer and a strong Ayyappa devotee “Ganagandharvan” K.J. Yesudas'. The Music is composed in Madhyamavathi raga by renowned music director G. Devarajan. The composition has 352 letters,108 words in 32 lines (8 stanzas).
